6 Numerical Testing

To test the finite element solution, the already considered (“prime”) beam was initially reanalysed by implementing the presented finite element solutions.

Afterwards, additional examples differing in geometrical parameters were analysed for independent studies. In the presented verification example, a 7-m-long beam element was considered. Young’s modulus of the material was E = 30 GPa, with Poisson ratio 0.3, whilst the width b was decreasing from bo = 0.6 m at the left-end to bL = 0.2 m at the right-end. The constant height of the cantilever was h = 0.30 m. Three cracks were separately introduced at the locations of 2.8 m, 3.5 m and 4.2 m from the left-end, respectively.

To examine the quality of the proposed computational model as well as the rotational spring definition differential equations utilising the new rotational spring definitions were solved initially. The quality of obtained transverse displacements and the reactions at the supports was assessed by comparing these values to the results from alternative 3D finite element models where a detailed realistic description of the cracks was established.

Ultimately, beam finite elements solutions for each case were established and compared against other solutions.
